In 2007, the Freedom Campervan was ready for launch after extensive road trials. We met with the CEO and MD of Tata Motors, Mr. Ravi Kant to showcase the transformation of Telcoline into the Freedom Campervan.
Impressed with this brilliant feat, Mr. Ravi Kant, facilitated the launch of the Freedom Campervan, at the 6th Annual Convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India-ATOAI, Delhi, on 17th & 18th December 2007. Thus, cementing the idea of Campervans in India.
The story of Overlanders began in 1996. Inspired by travels throughout Ladakh and further traveling overland throughout large parts of Australia and New Zealand in 1997-98. This experience gave rise to the idea of making overland travel comfortable in India.
Our founder, an avid traveller with a keen eye for detail, envisioned the possibility of campervans in India, that would offer both luxury and practicality.
After extensive research and creating a short list of potential vehicles; We set up meetings with various automotive vehicle manufacturers to find the perfect fit for Overlanders. We zeroed down on the TATA LT 4×4 Pick-up platform which met with all our design requirements for a compact Camper in Indian conditions.
The TATA Telcoline 4×4 platform was purely an export vehicle and not available for sale in India. After discussions with the Head of all India Sales-Chief, Rudrarup Maitra, we had the opportunity to meet the Chairman of Tata Motors, Shri. Ratan Tata to discuss the bright future of overland travel in India. Inspired by our vision, Shri. Ratan Tata facilitated the sale of Tata Telcoline 4×4 by homologating the vehicle and making way for the first ever campervan based on a pick-up platform in India in the year 2004.
This association with Tata Motors, enabled us to interact with their Engineering Research Centre (ERC Department) in getting invaluable inputs for making the Freedom Campervan which helped us operate within the ARAI guidelines.
